Overview

This Privacy Statement describes how the Human Values Project ("HVP", "we", "us", or "our") collects and processes information from researchers and visitors ("you" or "your") who access our website and participate in our research on AI alignment and human values in healthcare settings.

Information we collect

Research data

We collect data through two channels: the case-submission form on our Ethical Cases page, and the linked clinician study hosted on Qualtrics. Depending on which you participate in, this can include:

  • Ethical case descriptions you choose to share with us
  • Survey responses on clinical decisions and value alignment
  • Feedback on AI system behavior
  • Professional details you provide voluntarily (e.g., role, specialty, country of practice, years in practice)
  • Contact information you provide when you submit a case or participate in a study (name and email)

Website usage data

When you visit our website, we collect standard log data including:

  • IP addresses (anonymized)
  • Browser type and version
  • Pages visited
  • Time and date of visits

Analytics

We use Google Analytics to understand website usage patterns. This service may collect information about your behavior and interests, but the data is anonymized and cannot be used to identify you personally.

How we use information

We use the collected information for:

  • Conducting research on AI alignment and human values
  • Improving our understanding of clinical decision-making processes
  • Developing better frameworks for ethical AI implementation
  • Generating aggregated statistical analyses and research reports
  • Maintaining and improving website functionality

Data protection

We implement appropriate technical and organizational security measures to protect your information. All research data is anonymized and stored securely. However, no method of electronic storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Data sharing & publication

Research findings may be published in academic journals or presented at conferences. All published data will be aggregated and anonymized. We may share anonymized data with research partners under strict confidentiality agreements.

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • Request a copy of the personal data you’ve submitted to us
  • Request correction of any information you’ve submitted
  • Request deletion of your case submissions or study responses
  • Withdraw from the research and ask not to be contacted about future studies

To exercise any of these rights, email isaac_kohane@hms.harvard.edu with enough detail (e.g., the email address you used) for us to locate your record.
